Modelling is completely different to carving as it involves adding material, not subtracting material to create a sculpture or relief.
Modelling is a constant part of my practice as a model will often need to be created before carving to act as a guide for dimensions and design. These will often be sketches or 'maquettes'. I do not use a pointing machine as I like to allow the materials to speak for themselves and because of this, the resultant carving, although similar, will never be exactly the same. This is particularly true as I continue the decision-making process into the wood and stone even after creating a maquette..
Consequently, I sometimes cast these maquettes as limited editions to be exhibited in their own right, such as with 'Faith, Hope, Love'. I consider all models to be artworks in their own right.
